A one-room schoolhouse. That’s what Prairie began as when it opened it’s doors in 1866, so it was quite a treat when students had a chance to experience it for themselves.

Siblings were paired up and each classroom had a range of ages from 6 – 12 – just as it would’ve been in 1866. They learned about what the curriculum was about, and played games like “hide the penny” and “red rover.” They also learned about discipline in a one-room schoolhouse – wearing dunce caps and placing their nose in the corner away from other students.

The teachers had just as much fun with this experiment, many of them willingly dressing the part!
