Community Building & Outreach

These events are geared towards bringing our community together and supporting the larger Kansas City community.

ArtintheGarden

Art in the Garden

Art in the Garden is a long-standing Prairie tradition that celebrates the idea of recycling old materials to make new, beautiful art.

The event is held in the fall, during school, but families are encouraged to come after school to walk through the garden, experience the art installations, and grab some popcorn or Kona Ice.

Carnival_2022-2

Carnival

One of the most fun nights of the year that every student looks forward to!

The Prairie Carnival is an all-school celebration that is hosted in the fall on school grounds and features rides, face painting, games, food, and activities for students to enjoy.

SpecialGuestLunch

Special Guest Day

For Special Guest Day, students get to invite one guest of their choice to join them in their classroom to experience their daily life at Prairie, participate in a group activity, and enjoy lunch together.

Special Guest Day typically happens in the fall and overlaps with the Book Fair.

Field Day

Lace up your favorite tennis shoes for another student-favorite!

Field day is an outdoor, all-day event held during school, where each grade has a chance to participate in many games and activities. Field Day is hosted by the school in conjunction with PTA support and volunteers.

SteamNight-5

STEAM Night

STEAM Night moves students and families to rooms throughout the school to participate in activities and listen to experts in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

This is a free event that takes place on an evening in the Spring.

Snowball2021-2

Snowball Project

Each year, Prairie Elementary partners with Operation Breakthrough to sponsor several families in need during the holiday season.

Participating students can select a “snowball” that contains a gift wish for one of the children of a sponsored family. Gifts, as well as gift cards for meals, are then provided to the families.

Sock and Underwear Drive

This annual-school wide drive benefits the Shawnee Mission Area Council (SMAC) Clothing Exchange. The SMAC Clothing Exchange offers gently used, clean clothing and shoes to those who live within the SMSD boundaries for free.

In addition to the sock and underwear drive, the Prairie PTA executive board spends one day a year volunteering at the exchange.
