First Lego League

Do you have a child 9-14 years old? Do they enjoy creating things with LEGOs? Are they interested in robotics? Do they like challenges?

If these descriptions fit your child perhaps he/she would be interested in being on a FIRST LEGO League team in the fall. The theme for the 2012 season is “Senior Solutions.” The challenge will encourage teams to explore the topic of aging and how it may affect a person’s ability to maintain his or her lifestyle – solving issues like getting around, keeping in touch, or staying fit. Teams will research obstacles and then suggest ways to improve the quality of life for the seniors affected. Teams will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot to solve a set of missions on an obstacle course. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s signature set of Core Values. (For more information go to www.firstlegoleague.org)

Team registration for the 2012 FIRST LEGO League Challenge begins in the summer. We are trying to determine interest now so that we can start organizing before summer arrives.

If your child is interested in being involved with a FIRST LEGO League program or if you would like more information about this activity, please attend an informational meeting on May 2, 2012 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Prairie.

If you have questions before then, contact Donna Martin either by email ([email protected]) or by phone (913) 677-3829.

NOTE: If there are any parents who have experience in computer programming, engineering, or related fields, we are looking for Mentors for next year’s season. All new teams will require at least one Mentor as our current teams are filled to capacity.

For children ages 6-9 there is a Jr. FLL Please come to the meeting if you are interested in getting your child involved. Junior teams will require at least one Mentor also.
